PPG's packaging coatings portfolio includes inks for steel and aluminum cans. In Europe, PPG is a leading supplier of decorative printing inks for packaging applications, and has a well-deserved reputation for its superior technical service.
PPG's technical team members assist customers throughout the process, from selecting the products that meet their needs to formulating inks that are an exact color match to in-plant assistance for optimum product performance and quality.
PPG inks are designed for use on cans with a base coat and no overvarnish. These PPG inks are formulated for easy application onto the base-coated metal, especially at slower line speeds. They exhibit good flexibility and excellent resistance to the high temperatures encountered in pasteurization. Abrasion resistant inks maintain their color and high gloss from filling and distribution to store shelf display.
Aquavar inks are designed for printing onto aluminum cans with overvarnishing. Their high-solids content provides easy application onto the metal even at higher line speeds. They have reduced flying and misting. High pigment content gives Aquavar inks the strength to retain color clarity beneath the varnish, making them well adapted to wet-on-wet varnish application. They are well suited to designs that incorporate use of the aluminum color beneath the varnish.
High heat and light fastness means PPG thermal-cured inks stay true to color, and they readily achieve polymerization. Well adapted to wet-on-wet varnishing, they have good flexibility and adhesion to withstand processing rigors for drawn can making.
Ultraflash UV-cured inks for four or six-color printing are formulated without solvent to address environmental concerns for low VOC (volatile organic compounds). Fast dry time reduces energy needs and costs, and simplifies varnish application. These PPG inks have been designed for excellent varnishability with full polymerization.
PPG inks for two-piece beer and beverage cans are formulated to meet the processing and performance requirements of either nonvarnished or overvarnished systems.
For both thermal and UV curing, PPG can supply inks for lithography printing and for dry-offset printing on aluminum caps.
