Environmental, Health, and Safety
Education History: B.S. Chemical Engineering, University of Notre Dame, Currently pursuing MBA at Marquette University
Role: Environmental, Health, and Safety
Location: Oak Creek, WI
Business: Industrial Coatings
PPG Start Date: June 2006
I work with others to implement and maintain the PPG EHS process at the Oak Creek facility and other smaller plants. In addition to maintaining compliance with all air, water, and waste regulations, our team works to ensure that all PPG employees have a safe work environment. We strive to make sure everyone goes home safely every day.
One of the most significant projects I led involved implementing a facility-wide incident reporting system available to both salaried and hourly associates. This enabled us to obtain our goal of reporting and addressing at least one near miss per person in 2009.
Why I Like Working for PPG:
PPG offers a spectrum of opportunities for its employees. During my time here, I have had the opportunity to get involved with various teams working on initiatives ranging from employee wellness to environmental sustainability. The caliber of the people working at PPG can’t be beat – this in turn promotes effective teamwork and an excellent working environment. PPG cares about its employees and their personal development, and it shows. Management encourages employees to take advantage of developmental opportunities both within their current job and in other job functions. By allowing individuals to explore outside of their comfort zone, PPG enables its employees to discover new strengths and a variety of potential career paths.
Education: B.S. Pharmacy and M.S. Toxicology, Ewha Womans University, M.S. Polymer Science, Akron University
Role: Toxicology/Product Stewardship,
Location: Monroeville Chemical Center
PPG Start Date: June 1994
I work with other members to design, implement and administer a health hazard/toxicology information program for PPG products and raw materials and provide the ongoing interpretation and dissemination of such information internally and externally. We also managed toxicology testing for PPG chemical/polymer regulatory notification and product registration. We make sure PPG produces and sells safe and low risk products.
I led PPG project under US EPA’s Project eXcellence and Leadership (Project XL). Project XL was a national initiative that tests innovative ways of achieving better and more cost-effective public health and environmental protection. Under this project, PPG utilized the P2 framework (a set of chemical screening methods) during the early stages of product development, allowing us to improve the environmental performance of products while reducing costs, saving time, enhancing competitive advantage and decreasing potential liability. In 2009, PPG was recognized by EPA fulfilling our commitment.
Why I Enjoy Working for PPG?
Job and People. As a member of very small toxicology team, I am involved in various issues dealing with products, raw materials, hazard evaluation, risk assessment, and regulatory related topics. My days are filled with challenges, fun, and learning new things. I am surrounded by coworkers who have knowledge and are willing to work together.
