In Support of Education

The PPG Industries Foundation board favors projects that promote academic excellence and prepare the next generation of leaders in business, science, and technology. Support for students of high academic achievement and programs that attract young people to the study of science remain priorities.

There are new initiatives to involve underrepresented students in the learning and achievement process through involvement with mentoring by PPG employees and career choice exposure. At the pre-college level, PPG supports programs that impact on quality of teaching and motivate students to realize their potential.

PPG’s STEM Support Statement

PPG’s strategy for support of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) initiatives is defined by the emerging macro-trends (i.e. energy, environmental, consumer, security, new materials) which predicate our core markets, product offerings, and technology needs.  Consequently, PPG will judiciously support STEM programs which align with our Strategic Business Units and their respective technology needs and evolving product offerings.  Realizing a finite resource pool, PPG supports STEM initiatives for non-profit and governmental organizations reflecting our global footprint, emphasizing diversity and under-represented populations, focusing on programmatic initiatives in preference to capital requests or promotional opportunities, and tiered relative to type of support and eligibility at the local, state, regional, national, and global levels.

The STEM Support Matrix highlights these protocols for submitting STEM solicitations.

PPG donated $5,000 to Ohio State Women in Engineering Program for girls’ Chemical engineering-focused camp for girls entering ninth grade

For a second consecutive year, the PPG Industries Foundation donated $5,000 to the Women in Engineering (WiE) Program at The Ohio State University to support the WiE CHEER (CHEmical Engineering Rocks!) summer program for girls about to enter ninth grade.

Corporations participating in the program offer young women a chance to learn about real-world chemical engineering practices at a crucial point in their educational trajectory, as they are about to start high school. The students also learn about chemical engineering research areas and concepts that back up their observations of practicing chemical engineers.

The PPG grant helps cover materials and activity costs for the five-day program, which will be held June 18-22 this year. Each morning, WiE CHEER participants leave campus to visit area businesses where chemical engineers offer glimpses of their careers. This year, one of those businesses will be the PPG coatings manufacturing facility in Delaware, Ohio. Upon returning to campus each day, the girls engage in hands-on activities that introduce them to chemical engineering concepts, conducting experiments and projects as if they were practicing chemical engineers.
