Bringing Positive Impact to PPG CommunitiesFor more than six decades the PPG Industries Foundation has been bringing positive impact to the communities where PPG has a presence. Within the past few years, we have been pleased to announce several new initiatives and the continuation of several existing, successful partnerships that greatly enrich the communities where PPG has a presence. And in 2011, we formally extended that reach to PPG communities around the world through our Global Charitable Contributions Program.
PPG Industries has a long history of business success - in fact, since 1899 the company has been paying dividends to its stockholders. While PPG’s Charitable Contributions Programs do not have stockholders, they have been guided by similar strategies and goals to align with the company's business objectives and pays "dividends" to the communities where our company strives to be an exceptional corporate citizen.
Since the PPG Industries Foundation was formalized in 1951, it has contributed millions of dollars to organizations that enhance the educational, human services, cultural and arts, and civic and community interest needs of local regions and their populations. As the company changes, so does the focus of PPG’s Charitable Contributions Programs. Today we are especially interested in supporting innovative projects that contribute to sustainability and environmental responsibility. In addition, we are seeing an increased interest and support of educational endeavors that promote the advancement of science, technology, engineering and math that align with our company's core values.
In 2012 we announced the continuation of our ten year partnership with the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium for another ten years. The celebration was capped off with the initiation of the PPG Conservation and Sustainability Fund to support projects around the world that preserve endangered species and educate about environmental responsibility.
In 2012 we also continued our partnership with the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh with a fifth educational outreach program that features the many ways in which nature and technology intersect. We are hopeful that this program will be replicated in other cities where we have a presence - as several other programs have already done.
Through our Global Charitable Contributions Program, we began a partnership with the Geneva-based “Paint a Smile Foundation.” This group paints colorful murals to brighten hospitals and other care facilities throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. PPG funding helps extend its reach to more facilities to enhance patients’ experiences while they are being cared for.
One of the goals that we are most proud to pursue and achieve is that of encouraging and supporting employee volunteerism. Hundreds of PPG employees around the world are engaged in projects within their communities that are bringing positive impact to local organizations and the thousands of people they serve.
I encourage you to enjoy the exciting stories that we have to tell and to share in my enthusiasm for the growing role that PPG plays in communities around the world. The experiences are great – and extremely diverse - from learning about the significance of butterflies to our environment, to extending disaster relief for those affected by the more dangerous side of Nature, to bringing special art and cultural programs to our communities where they might not have been possible.
It is my privilege to play a role in PPG’s community and social responsibility efforts.
