PPG and NATM Present First Green Manufacturing Award to Engelbrecht Grills & Cookers
STRONGSVILLE, Ohio – April 6, 2011 – PPG Commercial Coatings and the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) honored Engelbrecht Grills & Cookers, Paxton, Illinois, with the first annual Green Manufacturing Award at the NATM 23rd Annual Convention and Trade Show held February 22-26, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The award recognizes the best innovation or novel solution by a member of the NATM that positively affects the environment.
PPG Commercial Coatings partnered with the NATM last year to establish the Green Manufacturing Award as an expression of PPG’s commitment to protecting and improving the environment. Companies competing for the award are judged on case studies in which they demonstrate improved, environmentally conscious performance in their operations. Criteria for the award include being an NATM member in good standing and documentation of the green initiative or improvements the company has made.
Chris Engelbrecht, owner of Engelbrecht Grills & Cookers, accepted the award. The company earned the honor for a number of reasons including a significant reduction of its carbon impact on the environment. In 2010, Engelbrecht began using a multi-fuel biomass burner that could burn almost anything fed into it. The company was able to reduce its winter propane use from 1,500 to approximately 75 gallons – the equivalent of three 100-pound cylinders. Other key initiatives included installation of energy-efficient T-5 fluorescent lighting and an idle function on all welders. The company also has a windbreak and grass habitat around its building.
"We’ve been a long-time supporter of the NATM,” said Ron Yarnell, PPG, manager, commercial market development. “We have a mutual concern for the environment and by establishing the award we wanted to acknowledge and honor the many activities NATM members are undertaking. Clearly, Engelbrecht is working hard and doing its part to safeguard the environment.”
The NATM represents manufacturers that produce light- and medium-duty trailers as well as suppliers to the industry. The organization promotes, both to the trailer industry and to the general public, universal recognition of safety and quality in trailer manufacturing. NATM works to improve the trailer industry through the promotion of compliance with its Guidelines and other initiatives. The association has more than 800 member companies across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other countries.
