Also known as: Feather Edge Cracks
Occurs: After Drying
DESCRIPTION
Cracking around the edges of a feather-edge repair.
- Too much or poor quality thinner or reducer.
- Improper substrate preparation brought about by using coarse papers on feather edges with resultant attack by solvents from the following paint coatings.
- 'Piling-on' in heavy wet coats.
- Effect of an old finish or previous repair.
- Poor shop temperature (too cold).
- Fanning with air to dry.
- Fast flash time between coats.
- Choose correct thinning ratio and use specified thinner.
- Use fine papers to feather edges of repair.
- Do not apply in heavy wet coats.
- Ensure new top coat is compatible with substrate underneath.
- Heat shop area or substrate being painted.
- Do not fan with air as this causes surface drying only.
- Allow recommended flash times between coats.
To eliminate feather edge cracking, sand to a sound, smooth finish and refinish.
