The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in solvents can react with other pollutants to create ozone at sea level. In high concentrations, they constitute a health hazard and harm vegetation.
In order to limit emissions of VOC, in pursuance of EU Directive 2004/42/EF, private car repairers and bus and heavy goods vehicle repairers is obliged to use low VOC products exclusively as of 1 January 2007.
However, the period from 1 January to 31 December 2007 is regarded as a transitional period where it's permissible to use high VOC products made before 1 January 2007.
The Transitional period comes to an end By the end of 2007 the transitional period regarding the VOC legislation will come to an end. It means that after 2007 it will be illegal to use and to sell autorefinish products that doesn’t have the EU required labelling or isn’t within the EU approved VOC limits.
The authorities maintaining the legislation emphasizes that illegal products must be used up or totally removed from the bodyshop by the end of the year. Irregularities might be reported to the police.
