Low-Emissivity (Low-E) Glass Technology
For more than a century, PPG has been known as a leader in residential glass products. PPG's commitment to continuing research and development has launched the industry's leading low-e products. In fact, PPG holds more patents than any other manufacturer in the low-e glass marketplace.
Energy needs vary from climate to climate and manufacturing specifications vary for different types of windows. No single coated low-e glass can meet all diverse requirements. Accordingly, PPG has developed Sungate 500 Coated Low-E Glass and Solarban® 60 Solar Control Low-E Glass to provide specific solutions for climate needs and energy code requirements.

Sungate® 500 Low-E Glass
Sungate 500 Low-E Glass provides better thermal performance with very high light transmittance levels and is ideally suited for homes in which passive solar energy is desired. This glass provides the clarity and color neutrality of clear uncoated glass and the lowest haze of any pyrolytic low-e coating available. PPG produces Sungate 500 glass using a patented pyrolytic process for exceptional durability. Standard Insulating Glass Unit with clear glass, conventional aluminum spacer, and air fill. Sungate® 500 Insulating Glass Unit with Sungate® Low-E glass, Intercept® spacer, and argon gas fill. Sungate® 500 glass keeps you warmer in the winter The overall U-Value (insulating value) of windows with Sungate® Low-E glass is about 28% better than standard clear insulating glass. (Lower U-values mean higher insulating performance.) Winter Furnace Heat Window U-Value= 0.46 Window U-Value= 0.33 Sungate® 500 glass keeps you cooler in the summer Sungate® Low-E glass transmits about 7% less solar energy than standard clear insulating glass.* Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is a measure of how much solar heat is transmitted through the glass. (Lower numbers mean less summer heat.) Summer Solar Heat SHGC= 0.75 SHGC= 0.70 Sungate® 500 glass reduces U.V. Energy and allows visible light Sungate® Low-E glass is about 17% more effective at reducing fabric-fading ultraviolet (U.V.) energy yet still allows about 94% as much visible light in as standard clear insulating glass.* Transmittances Ultraviolet Energy= 58% Visible Light= 81% Ultraviolet Energy= 48% Visible Light= 76% Recommended Application Sungate 500 Low-E glass is the solution for climates with cold winters and moderate summers, where passive solar heat is desired. It is an energy efficient window solution for insulating glass units or add-on storm windows. Back to top
