PPG Aerospace-PRC-DeSoto advanced performance topcoats qualified by Navy

SYLMAR, Calif., Aug. 16, 2007 – The U.S. Navy has qualified high-solids polyurethane topcoats made by PPG Aerospace – PRC-DeSoto to specification MIL-PRF-85285D and included them on the Navy’s Qualified Products List.

Desothane HS CA9311 and CA9800 series topcoats by PRC-DeSoto meet the specification for exterior aircraft coatings and demonstrated the required ability to maintain gloss and color after full specification testing, according to Duane Utter, PPG global segment manager, military coatings and classified products.

“These advanced-performance topcoats afford superior weathering resistance and cleanability, with less fading and color shifts than previous-generation topcoats, so repainting is needed less often,” Utter said.

The fluorinated formulas of the topcoats enhance their cleanability, Utter said. In testing, the next-generation Desothane topcoats exceeded the specification’s minimum standard.

Utter said the U.S. Air Force is using the Desothane coatings on F-16s maintained at Hill Air Force Base in Utah.

Desothane topcoat bases are made and tested at PPG’s Mojave, Calif., plant. Final color blending occurs at Mojave as well as at PPG’s application support centers in Dallas, Seattle and Atlanta, which allows for rapid response to customer needs, Utter said.
