PPG Protective and Marine Coatings supports national landmark

Intrepid aircraft carrier features innovative PPG marine coating technologies

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 2, 2008 – PPG Industries’ (NYSE:PPG) innovative marine coatings are prominently featured on the refurbished Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum (Intrepid).

Commissioned in 1943, the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier contributed greatly to winning the war in the Pacific Theater. After World War II, it served three tours of duty during the Vietnam War and provided surveillance service during the Cold War.

In 1982, the Intrepid began its career as a museum and is visited by more than 750,000 people every year. Two years ago a major refurbishment project was launched involving PPG protective and marine coatings.

“The opportunity to be such an integral part of this historic restoration is very exciting for PPG,” said Brad Rossetto, PPG general manager for protective and marine coatings (PMC) in the United States and Canada. “The Intrepid offers a great opportunity for us to provide our corrosion resistant marine coatings for such an American icon.”

PPG donated Amercoat 385 and Amercoat 888 non-skid coatings for the carrier’s flight deck. Amercoat non-skid coatings systems are designed to withstand the harshest environmental conditions, daily use and the impact of takeoffs and landings. The project features other Amercoat coatings products that protect the vessel’s hull. Covered stem to stern with PPG coatings, the Intrepid’s new home will be at New York’s Pier 86.

PPG Protective and Marine Coatings products protect customers’ assets in some of the world’s most demanding conditions and environments. PPG’s PMC products, featuring brand families such as Amercoat and Sigma Coatings, also coat various projects in the energy, infrastructure and marine markets.
