PPG gears up for booming Asian wind energy market

Innovative fiber glass, coatings help deliver maximum wind power efficiency

BEIJING, July 22, 2009 – PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG), one of the world’s only suppliers of both fiber glass and coatings, showcased its latest fiber glass reinforcements, blade coatings, tower coatings and services for the wind energy market at Wind Power Asia 2009, the 6th Asian Wind Energy Exhibition and Conference, July 8-10, in the China International Exhibition Center (CIEC).

PPG’s advanced fiber glass and coatings technologies can enhance the efficiency, performance and longevity of key wind power generation components. The PPG wind energy team offers comprehensive technical expertise and global resources, providing in-depth knowledge and services relating to supply chain, high-performance materials, application equipment, the manufacturing process and chemicals management to help improve production efficiency.

PPG blade coatings can extend the life of turbine blades while improving performance. With high durability, strength, chemical resistance, chip resistance, weather resistance and low-temperature performance, the latest blade coating offering from PPG, the AUE-80000 series, effectively protects blades from erosion. Its technology enhances blade longevity and helps manufacturers make durable blades that can withstand harsh conditions. The colorization of AUE-80000 has been localized in China to shorten the lead time to turbine manufacturers throughout Asia.

PPG has long been committed to developing “green” coating technologies, such as waterborne liquid, powder, low-volatile organic compound (VOC) and high-solids formulations. The newly launched Sigma Shield coatings for towers and metal components is a series of high-solids, low-VOC coatings that comply with ISO12944 and NORSOK M-501 global environmental standards, providing excellent impact and abrasion resistance. Tower and metal components finished with Sigma Shield coatings can be immersed in water as soon as 30 minutes after painting, making the coatings particularly suitable for offshore applications. These coatings are qualified and approved to meet the demanding duty of oil and gas, power, and infrastructure applications.

PPG Fiber Glass provides tailor-made reinforcements used in turbine blades around the world. The latest, HYBON 2026 fiber glass, manufactured in the United States and in Zibo, China, by PPG Sinoma Jinjing Fiber Glass Co., Ltd. – a joint venture of PPG and Sinoma Jinjing Fiber Glass Co. Ltd. – is designed for the wider energy market. HYBON 2026 fiber glass roving exceeds specifications for wind blades and achieves maximum adhesion with epoxy, vinyl ester and polyester resins.

HYBON 2026 fiber glass provides 20-percent higher tensile strength and double the fatigue performance of current wind products,” according to Cheryl Richards, PPG global market manager, wind energy. “It is designed for longer blades and offshore applications, exceeding wind blade designers’ requirements.”

Richards said PPG is committed to increasing its manufacturing capabilities in China to support local wind energy customers by offering them high-performance fiber glass and coatings. “China was the world’s second-largest wind energy market in 2008,” she said. “We have seen this market mature from using small turbine for production to using large ones that require high-performance materials, and we are able to provide appropriate technologies within the region to support this growth in turbine size.”

Part of PPG’s annual $300 million commitment to research and development is focused on the growth of its product offerings related to wind and other sustainable energy markets.
