PPG has Snap-on seeing more than red

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 31, 2009 – You don’t have to be an automotive technician to know that red is the signature color of Snap-on’s tool storage cabinets. But, through a collaborative innovation partnership with long-time coatings supplier PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG), color and finish have become a source of innovation and personal statement for users of Snap-on cabinets.

PPG worked with Snap-on to develop a Hammer Blue patterned metallic finish, augmenting Snap-on’s colorful standard tool storage palette with new colors and finishes in response to emerging consumer design and product personalization trends.

“As we’ve seen with appliances and consumer electronics in recent years, color is becoming an increasingly important part of the marketing mix for companies and the buying decision for consumers,” said Barry Keating, PPG director of North American powder coatings. “With Snap-on taking the lead, that trend is now taking hold in the tool storage market.”

Keating said Snap-on has always been responsive to customers’ color requests and seen the value in providing the industry’s best performing coatings, but now the company sees color as an aggressive way to enhance its leadership in innovation and market share.

Chris Potter, president of Snap-on’s tool storage business, said, “Snap-on produces the world’s best tool storage products, and coatings are a critical element of this leadership. We’ve worked with PPG on our coatings for more than 25 years, and our competitors have been playing catch-up ever since.

“Nobody offers the combination of colors, performance and long-term durability that we do,” Potter said. “Technicians and shop owners use Snap-on products to signify that they are leaders in their industry, and we count on PPG to help us keep it that way.”

John Landree, Snap-on product manager of tool storage, said, “Our customers are discerning and expect superior technology and long-term durability from Snap-on. Working with PPG has enabled us to add a new dimension of aesthetics to our products, with innovative powder coating colors and textures offering finishes that catch customers’ eyes and enable them to personalize our products for themselves.”

Powder coatings developed by PPG exclusively for Snap-on’s use provide the high-gloss finishes technicians associate with Snap-on tool storage kits along with unmatched durability. Testing has shown that XMR powder coatings by PPG resist scratches and mar nearly twice as well as the standard liquid and powder coatings used by other tool storage kit manufacturers.

“Our tool storage units endure a lot and still maintain their good looks,” Landree explained. “They get dinged by tools or splattered with harsh solvents, and some guys even clean them with gasoline. It takes a special coating to withstand that kind of treatment.”

The powder coatings used on Snap-on tool storage units also are better for the environment. Because they are made without solvents, the coatings emit virtually no volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
