PPG earns ‘green’ award from DWM magazine
Readers vote company top ‘green’ glass supplier
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 11, 2010 – PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG) received one of Door & Window Manufacturer (DWM) magazine’s first annual “green” awards after being voted the industry’s top “green” glass supplier by readers.
Award winners were selected in nine categories, such as glass supplier, door manufacturer, extrusion supplier, hardware manufacturer and glass restoration company. Editors of DWM magazine wrote that “while these companies have made huge strides [toward environmental sustainability], all are committed to further reducing their company’s impact on the environment. Whether it’s through how the product is manufactured or perhaps it’s through a huge commitment to recycling, reducing scrap and reducing energy usage in the plant, these companies are definitely making an impact.”
PPG has implemented numerous initiatives to reduce the environmental footprint of its glass business. In addition to pioneering oxy-fuel technology, PPG promotes environmentally responsible manufacturing by recovering and reusing virtually all of its glass manufacturing byproducts and by shipping its materials on reusable steel racks. PPG also supports regional sourcing through its nationwide network of certified glass fabricators and laminators, and it develops advanced glass products that enhance the concentration and collection of solar power.
As part of its overall corporate sustainability strategy, PPG has committed to reducing its total energy intensity by 25 percent between 2006 and 2016, and its total global greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent over the same period. In 2008, PPG also became the first company in the world to achieve Cradle to Cradle certification for all its architectural glass products.
As a result of these and other corporate initiatives, PPG was recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) as a top S&P 500 company for corporate transparency and carbon emissions management in 2009 and as the No. 1 company in the chemicals and pharmaceuticals sector in the 2008 Leadership Index.
DWM magazine serves manufacturers, fabricators and distributors of windows, doors and related fenestration products.
