PPG eco-conscious electrodeposition coating applied to Shifeng Group Mini-trucks
Steering mini-trucks in China toward low-carbon road
LIAOCHENG, Shandong, China, April 2, 2010 – PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG), a leading supplier of automotive coatings, recently attended the Launch Ceremony of the 8669 Project by Shifeng Group here. The ceremony for the launch of the group’s mini-trucks was themed around improving accuracy, adjusting structure, seizing opportunity and complying with regulations. Environmentally -responsible waterborne cathodic electrodeposition coatings provided by PPG are used as basecoats for these mini-trucks to help extend their lifespan with long-term protection.
Since providing Shifeng Group with white primer for its light trucks in July 2007, PPG has maintained a close relationship with the company. In 2008, PPG entered into an agreement with Shifeng Group for the application of electrodeposition coatings and won three production lines of e-coatings, 120MT, 160MT and 260MT, as well as the business for all primers and e-coatings for Shifeng’s electric cars. Products PPG supplies to Shifeng mainly include e-coatings and primers for light trucks and electric cars, as well as primers and the eco-conscious e-coatings for mini-trucks. When Shifeng upgrades its automotive frame corrosion protection, it will raise the anti-corrosion bar for all the trucks and main parts to the same level as passenger cars.
Mr. Yao Jianqing, business director of PPG Automotive Coatings China, said, “ As the global leader in transportation coatings and inventor of electrodeposition coatings, PPG continues to stay ahead of the market and has rich experience in electrodeposition coatings. To become a qualified strategic partner of the Shifeng Group, we are dedicated to making the most of our resources and collaborating with the company to create a role model for successful strategic cooperation. It is our common aspiration to contribute to the low-carbon future of the automotive industry in China.”
PPG is the global leader in transportation coatings. Most automotive manufacturers worldwide have used coating products or technologies by PPG. For the past three years, the company has spent approximately 3 percent of its earnings on research and development, with about 70 percent of that money funding the development of “green” products and environmentally responsible technologies. In 2008, the sales volume of “green” products by PPG was nearly US$3.8 billion, an increase of about 24 percent over the previous two years.
To support the rapidly growing automotive industry in China, PPG continues to increase its investment in the market, with a focus on low-carbon products and technologies. For instance, through targeting customers in North China, PPG Tianjin’s manufacturing facility has boasted healthy growth since its establishment in 1994. At present, the facility is preparing to expand its waterborne coatings capacity with an investment of US$10 million. In August 2008, PPG’s Wuhu automobile coatings plant began production, serving automotive manufacturers in East, South and Central China. In October 2009, PPG set up its first resin production facility in mainland China, PPG Coatings (Zhangjiagang) Co., Ltd, which offers environmentally responsible electrodeposition resins for automotive and industrial customers.
