PPG receives CSR Award – Special Prize and Excellent CSR Case Award
Company again recognized as fulfilling corporate social responsibility
BEIJING, July 6, 2010 – PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) has been honored by the China Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment (CAEFI), China Charity Federation, China's Private Economy Research Association and China Enterprise News, in association with many other organizations and institutions, as one of 30 winners of the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Award – Special Prize among more than 1,000 candidate companies, and as one of the excellent CSR cases among more than 200 submitted, for its efforts in recognizing the concerns and needs of society.
Mike Horton, vice president, coatings, PPG Asia/Pacific, accepted the award on behalf of PPG.
The awards were announced during the 2010 China Social Responsibility Annual Forum in Beijing, which was themed “Responsibility enlightens the future: Going forward towards comprehensive social responsibility management.” Mike Horton, vice president, coatings, PPG Asia/Pacific, accepted the award on behalf of PPG.
“PPG regards recognition of the concerns and needs of society as a key corporate value,” Horton said. “In the United States, PPG established the PPG Industries Foundation in 1951 to help improve the quality of life in communities where PPG has a presence and to encourage employee volunteerism with nonprofit organizations.
“In China, PPG’s welfare activities cover the communities where our plants operate. We organize several campaigns in each of the three communities annually, with a total investment in 2009 of more than RMB 2 million. We are proud that more than 60 percent of our employees took part in 2009, and we expect the number to increase this year. Our comprehensive social responsibility efforts encourage employees’ volunteerism and incorporate ‘green’ concepts.”
One example of PPG’s efforts is the “PPG Care Library Project,” which was named among 20 excellent CSR cases. Launched in September 2009 to help rebuild 50 libraries and provide more than 150,000 books and environmentally-responsible coatings to schools in Zitong county, one of the most earthquake-stricken regions in Sichuan, PPG’s total donation through the project is valued at more than RMB 4 million. PPG also launched a PPG CSR Zitong base as a platform for further contributions to the local community. The company recently sponsored a “PPG Eco-life Around You” writing competition for 10 middle schools in Zitong, encouraging students to learn why and how people should protect the environment and save energy and raising community awareness of environmental and energy issues.
PPG was awarded the “Excellent Cases of Multinational Corporations Fulfilling Social Responsibility” by China Enterprise News and the Employer Department of China Enterprise Confederation in 2009.
