PPG donates ‘green’ coatings to Tianjin apartment for the aging

TIANJIN, China, Nov. 17, 2010 – PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) has pledged to cover all costs for interior decoration of the Tianjin First Apartment for the Aging and has donated enough environmentally responsible wood coatings to cover approximately 22,000 square meters. The company has donated more than RMB 500,000 in all to help improve living conditions for local seniors.

Ms. Cathy Yan, PPG general manager, government affairs and business development, Asia/Pacific, said that with the establishment and improvement of a care system for the aging population in China, conditions in senior housing and nursing homes throughout the country have generated public concern. “It is incumbent upon us to help improve living conditions for the elders in our society, and PPG urges other enterprises in China to contribute to bettering our elders’ living environments as well,” she said.

To show appreciation, Mr. Sun Shixin, dean of the Tianjin First Apartment for the Aging, presented a Tablet of Honor, a Letter of Appointment as Honorary Dean, and painting and calligraphy works to Ms. Yan.

For the project, PPG provided waterborne wood coatings that contain no benzene, formaldehyde or heavy metals. These non-toxic, “green” wood coatings cause no harm to the environment or human health while helping to protect and beautify wood surfaces.

PPG holds recognition of the concerns and needs of society as a key corporate value. The company also has donated environmentally friendly coatings to organizations such as the Tianjin Institute of Children’s Welfare and the Second Welfare Home in Wuhu, Anhui Province. After the 2008 Sichuan earthquake disaster, PPG donated RMB 500,000 toward relief efforts, and in September 2009, PPG helped to rebuild 50 “PPG Care Libraries” in the earthquake-stricken Zitong County, Mianyang City, Sichuan Province. PPG also donated coatings and more than 150,000 books for the libraries, for a total value of approximately RMB 4 million. In addition, PPG was named in June 2010 among 30 winners of the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Award – Special Prize among more than 1,000 candidate companies, and as one of the excellent CSR cases among more than 200 submitted, for its efforts in recognizing the concerns and needs of society.
