PPG showcases two new grades of TESLIN substrate at CardsAsia 2011
SINGAPORE, April 13, 2011 – PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) will showcase new grades of TESLIN(R) substrate at booth 4L06 during CardsAsia 2011, April 13-15, in Singapore. The latest innovations, a biodegradable material and a laser-markable grade of Teslin substrate, are well suited to the production of high-quality card applications.
Teslin Biodegradable substrate is an environmentally-responsible synthetic material that makes it easier for manufacturers and companies to meet the growing demand for “green” performance. This sheet material provides an end-of-life solution while maintaining the durability, printability and built-in security inherent to the standard Teslin product. Teslin Biodegradable substrate, which was independently tested under the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) standard D5511, breaks down into environmentally acceptable components such as carbon dioxide and water only when placed in an anaerobic (oxygen-free) environment containing microbes that “eat” polymers. Such conditions are similar to those found in most landfills.
Teslin Laser-markable substrate offers a cost-efficient alternative to laserable polycarbonate (PC) for card personalization. As an important anti-tampering and anti-counterfeiting security feature, the ghost image and personal details of the card holder are laser-engraved onto the card at personalization. In this way, Teslin Laser-markable substrate addresses the growing demand for enforceable security without compromising benefits such as flex durability, ease of printing, high print quality and superior performance of electronics incorporated into security credentials.
Teslin substrate is a microporous sheet material that delivers a combination of benefits enabling a wide variety of applications, making it a preferred material for global card manufacturers. Its security, durability, enhanced integrated chip (IC) functionality and potential to reduce program costs have earned Teslin substrate application in national projects such as the electronic passport programs for the United States, United Kingdom and 35 other nations, and the new national identification card program for Mexico.
