PPG introduces SUNGATE 600 glass for heating-dominated climates
Designed for improved thermal performance and cleanability
PITTSBURGH, Jan. 24, 2012 – PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) has introduced SUNGATE(R) 600 glass, a passive, low-emissivity glass that is designed to help homes retain furnace and solar heat, especially in cold, northern climates.
PPG Industries introduced a dual-pane insulating glass unit (IGU) technology that combines new SUNGATE(R) 600 glass on the No. 4 surface and SOLARBAN(R) 60 glass on the No. 2 surface – separated by ½-inch argon gas-filled space – to achieve R-5 insulating performance. The IGU, which produces a winter nighttime U-value of 0.22 or less, enables window manufacturers to meet new federal mandates for energy efficiency while avoiding the higher production and material costs associated with triple-glazed windows.
Sungate 600 glass features a pyrolitic coating developed specifically for application on the exposed room-side (No. 4) surface of an insulating glass unit (IGU). The coating is durable because it is chemically bonded to the glass while it is still molten, and its star-crystalline structure gives Sungate 600 glass a smooth surface that cleans more easily than most other pyrolitic coated glasses.
Placing Sungate 600 glass on the most interior surface of an IGU optimizes its ability to trap heat from the furnace and winter sun, which can keep living spaces warmer and reduce energy consumption during the coldest months of the year.
PPG engineered Sungate 600 glass for use with SOLARBAN(R) coated glasses to achieve R-5 insulating value without the need for triple-glazing. When Sungate 600 coated glass on the No. 4 surface is combined with Solarban 60 coated glass and separated by half-inch, argon-gas-filled space, the resulting IGU delivers a winter nighttime U-value of 0.20. This double-pane construction enables window manufacturers to avoid the higher production and material costs associated with triple-glazed windows, while still meeting new federal mandates for energy efficiency.
