PPG to sponsor Open Source Office at AIA Expo
PITTSBURGH, May 8, 2012 – PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) will be a major sponsor of the Open Source Office: Defining the Firm of the Future, at the 2012 American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) National Convention and Design Exposition in Washington D.C., May 17-19.
Open Source Office designer Elif Tinney, IIDA, LEED AP, an associate and interior designer with BNIM, Kansas City, Mo., said the feature will be a focal point of AIA Expo2012 and is designed to foster dialogue among virtual and actual show attendees about the future of the architecture profession.
PPG glass will be highlighted in three high-visibility applications:
- STARPHIRE(R) ultra-clear glass will be used to create signage at the entry of the Open Source Office feature, including a large, laminated glass sign with graphics provided by GGI using ALICE(R) direct-to-glass printing that welcomes visitors and explains the purpose of the exhibit.
- Four 5-foot by 9-foot panels of tempered glass wall cladding, made with Starphire ultra-clear glass with a white flood coat on the back using Alice printing by GGI, will divide the exhibit space into separate pods and serve as writable boards to help promote an open exchange of ideas.
- A customized, transparent 48-inch by 24-inch coffee table crafted from 1-inch Starphire glass fabricated and tempered by GGI will feature a writable surface that enables architects and attendees to illustrate and discuss ideas.
Tinney said glass is the ultimate building and decorative material for offices of the present and future because of its versatility. “Glass is beautiful by itself, but its functionality makes it ideal for the space we’re designing for this show,” she said. “Whether it is used transparently as a piece of furniture or embedded with art for signage and informational graphics, it is exceptionally well-suited to creating attractive spaces that promote productivity, innovation and collaboration.”
The Open Source Office – commissioned by the AIA and Hanley Wood and designed by BNIM, the AIA Firm of the Year for 2011 – will be a 2,000 square-foot hub for networking and interaction at AIA Expo2012. According to the AIA, the space will examine “how furniture, flooring, lighting, walls and technology can all be modernized, integrated and subservient to the role of people and nature in working together to solve problems and create opportunities.”
