Students to feature SOLARBAN 70XL glass by PPG in 2013 Solar Decathlon home

Energy-efficient glass specified by Missouri University of Science & Technology team


PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) announced that a student team from Missouri University of Science & Technology will feature vinyl windows fabricated with SOLARBAN® 70XL solar control, low-emissivity (low-e) glass in the “Chameleon House” it is constructing for the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2013 Solar Decathlon, Oct. 3-13 in Irvine, Calif. Large picture and awning windows are part of an integrated passive solar control system that incorporates window overhangs, heat recovery and natural ventilation via operable windows.
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 2, 2013 – PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) announced that a student team from Missouri University of Science & Technology (Missouri S&T) will feature vinyl windows fabricated with SOLARBAN® 70XL glass in the “Chameleon House” it is constructing for the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2013 Solar Decathlon, Oct. 3-13 in Irvine, Calif.

The windows, which are being supplied by Crystal Window and Door Systems, Flushing, N.Y., are 7/8-inch insulating glass units (IGUs) with one pane each of 1/8-inch Solarban 70XL glass and 1/8-inch clear glass separated by an argon gas-filled space. The students specified large picture and awning windows to brighten the home’s open, configurable floor plan.

Glenn T. Miner, PPG director of construction, flat glass, said Solarban 70XL glass will contribute to the home’s energy efficiency, comfort and attractiveness. “Professional architects commonly specify Solarban 70XL glass to enhance the livability and sustainability of homes and commercial buildings,” he said. “We’re pleased that these young practitioners, who will be leading the next generation of sustainable design, recognize the value of high-performance glass products that combine energy efficiency, clear aesthetics and high levels of daylighting.”

Solarban 70XL glass, introduced as the industry’s first triple-silver-coated, solar control, low-emissivity (low-e) glass in 2005, combines exceptional visible light transmittance (VLT) of 64 percent with a solar heat gain coefficient of (SHGC) 0.27 in a standard 3/4-inch residential IGU.

Students at Missouri S&T designed the Chameleon House to maximize energy performance using highly engineered photovoltaic and solar thermal systems and advanced automation systems. The windows are part of an integrated passive solar control system that incorporates window overhangs, heat recovery and natural ventilation via operable windows.

The Solar Decathlon is a national competition in which college student teams design, build and operate houses powered by solar energy that are cost-effective, extremely energy-efficient, functional and attractive. The Missouri S&T team is one of 20 selected to participate.
