Innovation and technology have been a hallmark of our company's success throughout its history. 
At the dawn of the 21st century, technological innovation has made PPG the world's leading maker of transportation coatings and a major global supplier of industrial and packaging coatings, flat and fabricated glass, continuous-strand fiber glass, and industrial and specialty chemicals.

Just since 1992, many PPG technologies have been recognized with prestigious R&D 100 Awards by R&D Magazine as the year's most significant new product and process developments. Recipients have included:

  • lead-free electrodeposition anti-corrosion primer for automobiles
  • coated-glass auto windshield that does dual duty as a multi-purpose antenna
  • Gas barrier coating for plastic bottles to keep the fizz and freshness in beverages

We are also the developers of Transitions ® plastic photochromic eyewear lenses that automatically darken when exposed to sunlight. We developed a fiber glass yarn destined to revolutionize the manufacture of circuit boards for computers and other electronic devices. We have developed and are a key supplier of pharmaceutical intermediates for drugs used in the treatment of HIV and herpes.

Examples of our continuing emphasis on developing high-technology products include:

  • Sunclean® Glass that cleans itself
  • CeramiClear™ automotive clearcoat developed using nanotechnology
  • Chemical Mechanical Planarization (CMP) pads.

Science and Technology is fundamental to PPG's success and the company's businesses are supported by substantial annual investments in R&D.

With four principal technical centers in the Pittsburgh area, PPG is the largest employer of scientific personnel in a region that has earned a reputation as one of the most desirable in the United States for science, technology, higher education and health care.
