Preforming Process

Preforming is an intermediate molding process whereby the reinforcement is assembled in the shape of the part to be molded. Most preforms are made by chopping multi-end roving with a binder resin and applying it on top of a molded screen.

PPG PREFORMance Rovings are designed to revolutionize the process for the production of directed fiber preforms without the need to apply conventional binders such as emulsions or powders. Proprietary thermoplastic fibers are commingled with the fiber glass strands. This allows the preform fabricator to bind the preform through the application of heat after chopping. PREFORMance Rovings are compatible with a broad range of thermoset polymer systems. The product’s design flexibility provides options to meet various process conditions in RTM, RTM-Light and compression molding.
