Teslin® substrate is a microporous, dimensionally stable, highly filled, single-layer, polyolefin synthetic material. A non-abrasive inorganic filler comprises 60% of the weight and it is 65% air by volume.

Differentiating Teslin® substrate from other synthetic materials—and the key to many performance benefits—is a unique microporous structure that makes the substrate lightweight but strong and enables it to absorb and breathe while providing insulation and cushioning.

Without any other classification, SP designates our standard product line. Teslin SP substrate is used in nearly every type of printing process, including offset or flexo, thermal transfer and laser or ink jet. Specially designed grades (see Teslin TS, SPID, HD, Digital and IJ substrates) are available to meet the needs of more demanding applications.

Teslin TS (thermally stabilized) substrate features the same unique characteristics of Teslin SP substrate – printable, durable, waterproof, secure and adaptable – with an added emphasis on heat stability. Teslin TS substrate is more resistant to shrinkage (<1 percent) when exposed to elevated temperatures.

Teslin TS substrate works best in applications that involve preprinted, fixed graphics before the material is laser printed with variable data information. The ability to first offset or flexo print fixed information, then later laser print variable information, makes Teslin TS substrate perfect for a wide range of applications including: identification cards, licenses, travel documents, tags, labels, manuals, price sheets, maps, charts and other demanding applications.

Teslin SPID substrate is coated on both sides to allow for multi-sheet feeding and transport through laser printers and copiers. It is designed and manufactured specifically for laser printing and copier applications where dimensional stability (less than 1% shrinkage under the high temperatures of laser printers and copiers), high quality toner imaging, and durability are needed.

Teslin SPID substrate is intended for applications where the entire printing process will be done by xerographic processes . It has a faster and more reliable throughput compared to other synthetics. PPG does not warranty the suitability of Teslin SPID substrate or any other grade through specific brands of equipment. Typical applications for Teslin SPID substrate include identification cards, licenses, tags, labels, manuals, price sheets, and many other demanding applications.

Manufactured with a higher density than standard grades, Teslin HD substrate is generally suitable for tag and label applications which may require more stiffness and tear-resistance than standard Teslin® substrate products.

Typical applications for Teslin HD substrate include: tags, label, manual covers, menus, banners, pennants, maps (not for multi-fold maps with 14 and 18 mil thicknesses), point-of-purchase materials, and many other demanding applications.

Teslin digital substrate bonds readily and firmly with toners, inks, adhesives and laminating films. Designed especially for durability in digital printing presses such as Indigo®, Omnius® and Xeikon® , Teslin digital substrate does not require a coating to be compatible with these processes.

Developed for two-sided ink jet applications requiring waterproof durability, Teslin IJ WP substrate is treated to optimize ink jet printability, provide photo-realistic image quality, and offer extremely quick drying time and lamination peel strength with most dye and pigment-based inks in both wide and narrow formats. Teslin IJ WP substrate is coated on both sides with an ink jet-receptive coating that combines high ink jet image quality with the compatibility of standard thermal laminating films. Lamination peel strengths of 6-8 lbs are typical.

Teslin IJ WP substrate can be used with most desktop printers, including Hewlett Packard 890 and 2000, and Epson 500-700 and 5000. It can also be used with Encad NovaJet Pro 30-60 printers using GA and GS inks, as well as Hewlett Packard 2500-3500 cp printers using aqueous dye-based inks.

Teslin Security-Grade substrate incorporates covert and/or forensic, binary or information centric security features within the substrate to advance the security features available in cards and security credentials and documents, simplifying processing and potentially reducing per unit construction costs and.

With Teslin Security-Grade substrate security features are embedded within substrate during production, preventing them from being accessed or tampered with on the surface, eliminating the need for additional covert and forensic elements. Produced to unique customer specifications, Teslin Security-Grade substrate is available only direct from PPG under security contract with a secure supply chain.

Teslin® Biodegradable substrate enables you to manufacture products that meet the ever-growing demand for green performance without sacrificing the rugged-durability, print ease and quality, thermal stability and built-in security that standard-grade Teslin substrate is known for. Independently tested to ASTM standard D5511, this this environmentally-responsible synthetic material breaks down into components like carbon dioxide and water only when placed in an anaerobic (no oxygen) environment containing microbes that “eat” polymers. Such conditions are similar to those found in most landfills.

Teslin Biodegradable substrate requires no special handling or processing—use it like you would standard Teslin substrate to get the same high levels of performance.
