PPG coatings protect some of the city's most cherished landmarks, including the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, Freedom Tower and others. For the globally renown architectural firms involved in creating this monolithic steel playground, this legacy made PPG the clear coatings choice for the project, considered a triumph in culture, commerce and cuisine.

PPG metal coatings play an integral role in at least three of the six towers for both exterior and interior components.

55 Hudson Yards – One of the First U.S. Skyscrapers with Powder Finish

Among the three PPG-coated landmarks in this next-generation historic development, 55 Hudson Yards is perhaps the most notable for being one of the first skyscrapers in the U.S. to be finished with powder coatings.

Designed by Kohn Pederson Fox Associates with coatings applied by Spectrum Metal Coatings, a member of PPG’s Certified Applicator Program™ (CAP), the 51-story structure incorporated nearly 20,000 pounds of smooth and textured PPG CORAFLON® coatings on its metal curtain wall and window frames. The specially formulated "Black Flower" color created by PPG was developed to mimic the cast-iron facades and industrial heritage of the surrounding area.

PPG Coraflon powder coatings are formulated using fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) resins to provide satin and high-luster glosses in solid and mica-flecked colors. Click here for more information on PPG Coraflon .

35 Hudson Yards – Interior Color Custom-Formulated by PPG

35 Hudson Yards, the tallest of the three buildings standing at 92 stories, is a residential tower designed by David Childs of Skidmore Owings and Merrill, one of the most accomplished skyscraper architects in the world.

The interior of the building's podium incorporates more than 25,000 pounds of coated aluminum extrusions that were fashioned into a sleek terrace handrail and balustrade and finished with PPG DURACRON® coating by Keymark Corp., another member of PPG's CAP program.

Working with the designer and with the help of PPG’s color services, PPG custom formulated the interior color to complement the other surface materials used throughout the upscale skyscraper.

15 Hudson Yards – Unique Coatings with Decades of Protection

The first residential tower to open in the development was the 70-story 15 Hudson Yard, which features a dramatic "Corset Tower," designed by Diller, Scofidio + Renfro.

Working in collaboration with Keymark Corp, a PPG certified applicator, the architect and building owner, PPG specially formulated two custom colors—one for the exterior curtain wall and the other for the interior façade.

PPG Duracron was selected for the interior while PPG DURANAR® coating was used on the exterior due to its proven ability to retain original color and gloss for decades, even in the most challenging environments.

Based on 70% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) resin and proprietary PPG resins and pigments, PPG Duranar coatings meet the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance/American Architectural Manufacturers Association (FGIA/AAMA) 2605 standard for weathering performance – the most rigorous in the industry.
