Children’s play specialist, O. Fred Donaldson, once said, “Children learn as they PLAY. Most importantly, in PLAY children LEARN how to LEARN.” This saying proves true in Matt’s Maker Spaces around the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area where kids explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) through experiential and hands-on learning.
PPG Foundation opens Matt’s Maker Space with Neighborhood Academy
Recently, the PPG Foundation partnered with Matt’s Maker Spaces to unveil its latest location at The Neighborhood Academy and establish a new place for students to create and collaborate in a safe and judgment-free environment.
Matt Conover, loved technology, creating and tinkering and was always interested in hands-on learning, building with Legos and letting his creativity and imagination guide him. After Matt passed away from cancer at the age of 12, the Conover family started Matt’s Maker Spaces in his memory.
Now, there are more than 30 Matt’s Maker Spaces in Western Pennsylvania in locations such as pre-K to grade 12 schools, libraries, community centers and hospitals.
“We’re pleased to join Matt’s Maker Space to create this new space at The Neighborhood Academy and help the school’s efforts to integrate STEAM activities into their curriculum,” said Malesia Dunn, executive director, PPG Foundation and corporate global social responsibility. “To build the next generation of diverse and innovative STEM leaders, the PPG Foundation supports The Neighborhood Academy in providing opportunities that spark an early interest in exploration and discovery and encourage curiosity in the possibilities of STEM studies.”
Matt’s Maker Space is the latest STEM program between the PPG Foundation and Neighborhood Academy. Previously, several PPG leaders volunteered at Female Focus, a 14-week STEM program designed to inspire high school girls to engage in hands-on STEM activities and career exploration.
The Neighborhood Academy, a grade six to 12 private, independent, college-preparatory school, was designed to meet the needs of families who demonstrate financial need. Its mission is to break the cycle of generational poverty by empowering youth and preparing them for college and citizenship.
