The iconic Bulletin Building in Philadelphia is protected by PPG’s coatings

The Bulletin Building, an iconic Philadelphia landmark, has been dramatically transformed with the help of PPG’s high-performance powder coatings.

Originally built in 1954 in the University City neighborhood, this monumental structure was designed by renowned architect George Howe, known for his preference for sweeping, uninterrupted architectural lines.

A Historic Transformation with Striking Design

Once home to the Evening Bulletin newspaper until its closure in 1982, the Bulletin Building today features a distinctive glass façade framed by red powder-coated metal. The building’s signature east-facing façade, originally a windowless expanse of gray glazed brick, has been reimagined as part of a major redevelopment project.

Brandywine Realty Trust, in collaboration with architectural firm KieranTimberlake, spearheaded the revitalization of this 14-acre mixed-use neighborhood. The previous ribbon windows, installed by Drexel University in 1983, were replaced with expansive clear glass walls. These are framed by shimmering deep cherry-colored metal cladding, custom formulated by PPG to enhance both aesthetics and durability.

Innovative Coating Technology for Lasting Beauty

PPG’s architectural metal coatings team applied the company’s automotive coatings expertise to develop the stunning “Galaxy Red” powder coating. This PPG CORAFLON® powder topcoat incorporates advanced glass flake technology, creating a shimmering, multi-dimensional effect that adds depth and visual interest to the metal framing.

Spectrum Metal Finishing, a certified member of the PPG CAP CERTIFIED APPLICATOR PROGRAM™, enhanced this effect using an exclusive two-bake paint application system. This process prevents the glass flakes from seeping into the basecoat, intensifying the pearlescent finish.

Superior Performance for Exterior Applications

PPG Coraflon powder coatings are based on a proprietary FEVE formulation, selected for their exceptional FGIA/AAMA 2605 weathering performance. These coatings offer outstanding durability, colorfastness and gloss retention, making them ideal for both restoration and new architectural metal applications.
