As manufacturers face increasing pressure to improve efficiency, enhance product performance and reduce carbon emissions, PPG continues to invest in advanced finishing solutions, technical capabilities and manufacturing infrastructure that help customers meet these evolving demands. Powder coating technologies are at the forefront of these efforts.
Powder coatings have become increasingly attractive to manufacturers seeking solutions that deliver exceptional durability, design flexibility and productivity. Advantages such as advanced corrosion protection, excellent edge coverage and a wide range of color and finishing options have driven adoption across numerous industries, including automotive, general industrial, appliance, furniture, architectural and extrusion applications.
Among the many advantages driving adoption, sustainability has emerged as one of the most significant factors influencing coating selection. Powder coatings are typically formulated without solvents that emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and overspray can often be reclaimed and reused during the application process, helping reduce waste and improve material utilization.
PPG Invests in Powder Coating Production Capabilities
A recent $2 million investment in PPG’s powder coating manufacturing plant in Verbania, Italy, illustrates the company's commitment to supporting customers across the region. The project adds two new production lines equipped with advanced extruders and milling technology, enabling PPG to serve customers across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) with greater flexibility, shorter lead times and more efficient production of small batch orders.
"Customers increasingly require greater flexibility, faster response times and reliable delivery of specialized powder coating solutions," said Joanna Sproncel-Bagrowska, PPG operations manufacturing director, EMEA, Industrial Coatings. "This investment strengthens our ability to meet those needs while enhancing our manufacturing capabilities, including reduced material waste, lower energy consumption and improved operational efficiency."
The Verbania facility serves a diverse customer base, including manufacturers of general finishing products, architectural extrusions, appliances, radiators and chassis components. The expanded capacity also improves regional access to some of PPG's most advanced powder coating technologies, including PPG CORAFLON® Platinum hyper-durable powder coatings for architectural applications.
Designed for demanding exterior environments, PPG Coraflon Platinum coatings offer exceptional weatherability and outstanding color and gloss retention. The technology helps architects, building owners and applicators achieve long-term performance while supporting greater design freedom.
Strengthening a Global Powder Coatings Network
The Verbania expansion is part of PPG's broader strategy to strengthen its global powder coatings manufacturing network. Over the past several years, PPG has invested in powder coating facilities around the world to increase manufacturing capacity, improve production efficiency and expand technology capabilities.
One notable example was PPG's $44 million investment in powder coating manufacturing sites in the United States and Latin America in 2023. These upgrades expanded production capacity, added bonded metallic powder capabilities, improved processing efficiency through automation and enhanced the ability to produce small, medium and large batch sizes more effectively.
Investing in the Future of Powder Coatings
Today, PPG is one of the world's leading suppliers of powder coatings, serving customers across automotive, general industrial, appliance, furniture, architectural and many other markets.
The company operates 21 powder manufacturing facilities worldwide, including multiple sites with bonding capabilities, as well as a powder resin plant, a dedicated powder coatings research and development (R&D) center and a global center of excellence.
Investments like the Verbania expansion reflect PPG's long-term commitment to advancing powder coating technology and helping manufacturers implement more sustainable and efficient finishing operations.
