Innovative Retroreflective Powder Coating Enhances Rider Safety
In 2022, PPG launched a retroreflective powder coating, PPG ENVIROCRON® LUM, designed to significantly improve nighttime visibility for cyclists.
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), the risk of fatal accidents at night is up to three times higher than during the day due to limited visibility.
PPG’s Envirocron LUM powder coating addresses this critical safety issue by reflecting maximum light from vehicle headlights back to drivers, making bikes more visible in low-light conditions.
Originally developed for a ride-sharing company’s e-bikes, this proprietary technology is the first commercial powder coating embedded with retroreflective glass beads.
