OEM Paint
Pre-treatment and Painting
Today's vehicles are manufactured from a wide variety of materials, including:
- Aluminium
- Steel
- Galvanised steel
- Magnesium
- Plastics
Various coatings are applied to these substrates, with each layer performing a particular task.
OEM Paint Layers
A paint finish consists of three key layers:
- Primer coat
- Filler/intermediate coat
- Topcoat (water or solvent-based paint and clearcoat)
OEM Paint-Drying Process
- A high temperature (approximately 140°C) drying process after application ensures that the coat is chemically cross-linked and workable, i.e. that it can be sanded.
- The Intermediate drying process, or 'flash-off', is the time in which liquid components evaporate before further coats are applied.
Pre-Treatment
- Primarily serves to ensure good adhesion to the substrate.
- Phosphate > Substrate adhesion
