In 1965, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Nan Knox Unit in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. became one of the first of the Broward County Clubs and launched a path full of history and heritage. Among the first Clubs to welcome girls into what was originally the ‘Boys Clubs of Broward,’ it is now a second home for generations of families that continue to attend today.
PPG leaders ‘Build the Future’ at COLORFUL COMMUNITIES project
The Nan Knox Unit was also the home of a recent COLORFUL COMMUNITIES® project, where 115 of PPG’s top global leaders spent a portion of their annual global leadership meeting repainting the club’s aviation learning center, art and computer rooms and media center.
“From the moment they enter the building, bright, fresh colors welcome the Club’s members. These refreshed STEM learning spaces have the potential to create the future leaders in many of the industries PPG serves, including aviation,” said Malesia Dunn, executive director, PPG Foundation and corporate global social responsibility.
Highlights of the project included applying a mural designed around the Club’s motto, “Whatever it takes.” Additional murals aimed to inspire Nan Nox Unit members to “Build the Future” by depicting aviation careers.
“The revitalization helps us to assure that success is within reach of every young person who walks through the doors and allows us to continue providing the same world-class Club experience that has been offered for the last 59 years,” said Cameron Warrick, director of development and corporate relations, Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County.
The Club offers after-school and summer programs to more than 200 students and provides programs in areas such as character and leadership development, education and career development, health and life skills, and academic success.
In addition to painting, PPG employee volunteers assembled 150 STEM activity kits and 55 bicycles, all which were donated to local Boys & Girls Club members.
PPG and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County hold a long-standing relationship with several of the area’s Clubs revitalized as part of past year’s global leadership Colorful Communities projects.
