PPG Coatings Services’ Shelby Twp., Michigan facility was established in 2001 as a co-located facility serving the coating and logistical needs of the automotive class A exterior trim industry. Offering electrocoat (e-coat) and powder-coat services, the plant is regarded as an industry leader in class A exterior trim coatings. It supplies multiple automotive, motorcycle and heavy truck customers in domestic and overseas markets.

Capabilities:

The Shelby Twp. facility offers high-volume Class A automotive exterior (and interior) trim coatings via a state-of-the-art in-line and enclosed e-coat application system that minimizes contamination and handling concerns.

A (COS) operating system manages all aspects of business, providing systematic, consistent and standardized operating processes. Supported by computerized diagnostic systems, the operating system provides “real time” tracking and data for analysis, resulting in excellent finish quality that meets or exceeds North American, Asian and European OEM aesthetic standards.

The plant provides low-gloss, mid gloss and high-gloss powder materials in black, silver and grey colors, along with the ability to add metallic effects. A multi-stage duplex pretreatment system enables production of mixed-metal substrates incorporating aluminum, galvanized, cold-roll steel and castings. Coatings for the motorcycle, heavy truck and architectural industries also are applied at this facility.

Shelby has an 11-stage pretreatment system that utilizes both impingement and immersion processes to deliver superior metal preparation services prior to e-coat application. The plant uses PPG Powercron 590-534 electrocoat material and has a window size of 80 x 28 inches to accommodate processing of small and large Class A components.

The Shelby plant’s powder booth is part of a total in-line and enclosed system that contains products in a Class A quality-controlled environment. An environmentally controlled powder room system consisting of two powder booths with reclaim modules allows for quick changes and robust cleaning and maintenance processes. An Integrated Control System ensures repeatable and consistent processing, and the line’s 80 x 28-inch window size accommodates processing of small and large Class A components.

Environmentally Friendly

The Shelby Twp. facility utilizes “heavy-metal-free” cathodic epoxy electrocoat material with low VOCs and HAPS content and powder topcoat materials that are environmentally friendly. A state-of-the-art wastewater treatment system assures compliance with all environmental regulations.
