Hi-Guard Scratch-Resistant Hard Coatings

Optical coatings: Scratch resistance for real life

Our PPG HI-GARD® lens coating solutions offer a versatile portfolio of high-performance coatings designed to protect today’s advanced optical lens materials. Whether for everyday eyewear or specialized ophthalmic applications, PPG Hi-Gard lens coating  deliver durable, scratch-resistant protection that enhance longevity and wearer satisfaction.

Engineered for ophthalmic plastic lens substrates, our Hi-Gard coatings preserve optical clarity while significantly improving surface durability. Lenses treated with Hi-Gard lens coatings are four to six times more scratch-resistant than uncoated lenses, helping improve customer satisfaction.

Hi-Gard lens coatings are compatible with standard dip and spin coating processes, making them easy to integrate into existing lens manufacturing operations. They are available in multiple refractive index options, along with corresponding primer coatings that further enhance the overall durability and protection of the lens substrate.

PPG HI-GARD® Non-Methanol Coating—a sustainable alternative to traditional methanol-based coatings.

Hi-Gard Non-Methanol coating delivers the same proven scratch resistance as our standard Hi-Gard solution, while eliminating methanol exposure—a substance that is acutely toxic and increasingly restricted by global safety regulations, including REACH and OSHA. This new formulation helps manufacturers stay ahead of evolving compliance standards, streamline their operations and enhance workplace safety by reducing the need for personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.

Developed as a drop-in replacement, Hi-Gard Non-Methanol coating is compatible with existing systems and includes a specially formulated replenishment solvent to maintain optimal viscosity and process control. It’s available in low-color and tintable variants, making it ideal for a wide range of lens applications.

Key Features of Hi-Gard Coatings

  • Chemical resistance – Withstands exposure to acetone, isopropyl alcohol and other common eyeglass cleaners.
  • Scratch resistance – Exhibits lower haze gain after abrasion testing against uncoated lens, helping lenses stay clear.
  • Process flexibility – Suitable for dip and spin coating methods, with easy integration into standard production lines.
  • Index versatility – Available in multiple refractive indexes to match diverse lens materials and performance needs.
  • Sustainability option – Non-Methanol coating and non-NMP (N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone) primer support toxicity reduction and regulatory compliance goals.

At PPG, we believe innovation should support both people and the planet by delivering solutions that safeguard people, enhance product performance, and drive sustainable innovation.
