Building future-ready communities with AI education 

Nearly 100 Pittsburgh-area students visited PPG’s global headquarters for the Artificial Intelligence Pathways Institute (AIPI) summer showcase. The room was full of energy as students shared how they are learning about AI and how it is changing the world around them. 

The showcase wrapped up a three-week summer program co-led by PPG and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania. The program introduced local teenagers to the power, promise and ethical implications of artificial intelligence through projects like AI-generated music and fashion, as well as discussions about AI ethics and policy. 

More than 20 PPG IT volunteers helped students learn about AI, solve real-world problems and explore careers in technology. For Ryan Young, global IT director, the program was a way to give back and invest in the next generation.  

“It's all about giving back, especially in the communities where we work and live. This program is a great head start for students as they prepare for high school, college and future careers,” said Young. “Programs like AIPI help build the future workforce by giving young people the AI knowledge and skills they will need in tomorrow’s workplace.” 

Through programs like AIPI, the PPG Foundation helps students build AI skills for the workplace of the future.  

AIPI: Learning AI Through Real-World Experiences 

Now in its seventh year, AIPI introduces students to AI, modern computing and programming while encouraging conversations about the technology's benefits and challenges. Student participant Laneare Mitchell shared that the program helped her gain new skills while building friendships. “If I could ever recommend something for teens to do, it would be AIPI.”  

“AI presents both tremendous opportunities and challenges in the classroom, in workplaces, and in everyday life. Students in BGCWPA’s nationally recognized AIPI program have the chance to utilize AI to improve their own communities, build relationships with mentors in the field, and learn cutting-edge technology that places them on a path toward success in future careers with family-thriving wages,” said Christopher Watts, President and CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania. “We are grateful to PPG and the PPG Foundation for recognizing the importance of investing in a strong future workforce for our region, especially in communities that may lack access to this type of experience.” 

Empowered AI: Expanding Access to Emerging Technologies 

Through a partnership with the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, Carlow University and Code Differently, the PPG Foundation is also supporting Empowered AI, a three-week program that provides students with hands-on training in AI, machine learning and responsible use. Participants earn an AI certification and gain exposure to leadership and career development opportunities as they strengthen their college and career readiness.
