Sustainability

Delivering Lasting Value for Our Customers

As a leading provider of paints, coatings and specialty materials, PPG is committed to sustainability by operating with integrity, working safely, respecting the contributions of our people, preserving the environment and supporting the communities where we operate.

Our mission of protecting and beautifying the world, and our culture of continuous improvement, are central to our sustainability promise. Whether it is introducing sustainability-advantaged products, increasing the efficiency of our operations or our customers’ operations, our efforts extend to many areas that affect sustainability performance.

Our sustainability promise in action

Sustainability is core to our purpose — we protect and beautify the world. It guides how we innovate, operate, and collaborate across our value chain. Our greenhouse gas reduction targets are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), ensuring that our decarbonization pathway aligns with global climate goals.

We continue expanding our portfolio of sustainably advantaged products that help our customers reduce environmental impacts, improve efficiency, and advance their own sustainability objectives. These solutions contribute to measurable improvements in energy use, waste reduction, emissions, and resource efficiency across industries.

We advance circularity and responsible operations by reducing waste, increasing renewable energy use, assessing our key suppliers against sustainability and social responsibility criteria, and investing in communities globally through our long‑standing COLORFUL COMMUNITIES® initiatives.

We're proud of the overall sustainability progress our company has achieved, and we encourage you to learn more about our efforts by visiting our corporate sustainability website.

Count on PPG TESLIN® substrate to support your sustainability efforts

Sustainable change can come from small steps. Our PPG TESLIN® substrate is one more PPG innovation that can help support our customers’ sustainability goals.

PPG Teslin substrate:

  • contains up to 60% less plastic compared to other similar synthetic substrate products (polyethylene terephthalate or PET, biaxially oriented polypropylene or BOPP). When comparing an A4 sized sheet of 7 mil Teslin substrate versus a 4 mil PET film, this saves up to 4.5 metric tonnes of plastic entering the economy and waste streams and translates into 15 metric tonnes of avoided CO 2 emissions, per one million A4 sizes sheets.
  • is a polymer-based film and unlike pulp-based paper it does not include any forestry products.
  • does not include any toxic ingredients as defined under Reach, RoHS or Prop 65.
  • does not contain perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) — sometimes called ‘forever chemicals' because they don't break down easily and can stay in the environment and in the human body for a long time and have the potential to be a health concern.
  • can be safely disposed at the end of its useful life.

Additionally, our portfolio includes PPG Teslin Bio substrate. Tested to ASTM D5511 for biodegradation, substantially all of Teslin Bio substrate will ultimately biodegrade into microbe-consumable particles and other naturally occurring substances. The material breaks down only when placed in an anaerobic (no oxygen, i.e. landfill) environment containing microbes that “eat” polymers. Studies have shown up to 7.8% degradation over 74 days with continued breakdown expected, but it isn't known if the rate of degradation for the portion of Teslin Bio substrate that will degrade naturally will remain constant over time.
